Monaco go head-to-head against Benfica on Wednesday. Read our Predictions and Betting Tips with Match Preview, Head-to-head stats (h2h) and Team Form Analysis.
Our prediction for this Champions League match
Stade Louis II will host Wednesday’s football game between Monaco and Benfica, the two teams sitting in the opposite halves of the standings. Les Rouges et Blancs aim to build on back-to-back wins over Crvena Zvezda and Bologna and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play. Even though all Balogun, Coulibaly, Diatta, and Diop miss out with injuries, we are positive that the hosts are going to find the net in the round 5 clash. Breel Embolo is widely expected to lead line for the Ligue 1 outfit.
The Eagles, on the other hand, failed to spoil Bayern Munich’s party at Allianz Arena in their last group game, but given their attacking potential, we believe that there is a big value in betting on both teams to score. It has to be noted that Benfica crushed Estrela 7-0 in the Taca de Portugal at the weekend. Both Tiago Gouveia and Gianluca Prestianni are out of contention with injuries for the visiting team.
How the bookies view it: Upper hand for Monaco
Monaco have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 11/10 by PHpub to claim the win. A victory for Benfica is valued at 12/5 while PHpub is also offering odds of 2/1 for a draw.
Players to watch: Red hot Di Maria
Benfica’s Angel Di Maria comes into Wednesday’s match in red hot form having scored five goals in the last two matches. The veteran attacker is priced at 16/5 by Jilipark to score anytime.
Monaco have plenty of quality in attack but Maghnes Akliouche has caught the eye in the last few matches. The forward has two Champions League goals this season and is priced at 13/5 by Jilipark to score anytime.
Probable line-ups
Monaco have injury problems with Krepin Diatta, Edan Diop and Folarin Balogun still out injured. Thilo Kehrer should continue at the back while Breel Embolo should retain his place in attack.
Kerem Akturkoglu was a halftime substitute last weekend but should earn a start on Wednesday. Di Maria should also continue in attack alongside Vangelis Pavlidis, who is expected to lead the line.
Monaco: Majecki, Mawissa, Salisu, Kehrer, Vanderson, Magassa, Zakaria, Akliouche, Ben Seghir, Golovin
Benfica: Trubin, Fernandez, Otamendi, Araujo, Bah, Florentino, Aursnes, Akturkoglun Kokcu, Di Maria, Pavlidis
Monaco vs Benfica Prediction
Monaco will be aiming to record their fourth win in the Champions League when they face Benfica on Wednesday.
The French side recorded a narrow victory over Bologna in their recent Champions League fixture when captain Thilo Kehrer scored with a right footed shot from close range in the 86th minute.
Monaco head into this game on the back of two successive league wins over Strasbourg and Brest respectively, scoring six goals and conceding four in both games.
Similarly, Benfica recorded a huge victory over Estrela in their recent fixture. Angel Di Maria completed a hat-trick in the first 20 minutes of the game before Benfica scored four more goals in the second half.
However, they lost their recent Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena as Jamal Musiala’s 67th strike proved decisive.
Benfica will be looking to put this defeat behind them on Wednesday as they look to climb into the top half of the table.
We expect Monaco to emerge victorious in this fixture because they are in a better form in this competition compared to Benfica.
We also expect over 2.5 goals because six of Benfica’s last seven games produced this range of goals while Monaco have been involved in several highscoring fixtures this season too.
Lastly, we expect Maghnes Akliouche to score anytime because the forward was involved in five goals in his last six games.
In fact, he has three goal involvements in the Champions League this season, we expect him to find the back of the net on Wednesday.
